Here is a follow up. The problem was that during startup, at the point
where the screen color appears, and just before the screen icons are
drawn, the system would hang. I would see the clock icon and nothing
further. When I would restart the computer, it would startup normally.
I installed rexxautostart, and for one week I had no problems. Then on one
cold morning, it happened again. I removed rexxautostart, and I took out
Start Error Log from the startup folder.
It is now two weeks without a problem, so hopefully Start Error Log was
the culprit -- as Steven suspected.
