That is correct for POP and unencrypted SMTP traffic (which is most SMTP
traffic from email clients).

Well its not really that bad. To see your password someone would have to have
control of a computer between your computer and the server you are getting your
email from so they could capture the IP traffic. In this case you captured the
IP traffic at your computer and put it on the internet.
