Did you test your setup locally and did it work?
What you wanted to do can work, but there are some prerequisites. You
need at have the ftp port open on your router(s) and you need to have the
permissions set to allow the downloads.
If everything is set up correctly, clicking on the link will initiate the
download.
Iptrace can be your friend when trying to figure out why your side will
not talk correctly.
The tcp/ip trace facility is handy too.
