I have run some tests on my system and compared my trace to Sheridan's trace
(the third trace in his message). The first DNS request, packet #1, in
Sheridan's trace is answered, packet #2, indicating that the request succeeded
(in my trace it always fails). The IP address returned is a Roadrunner IP
24.28.199.152 but not Sheridans IP and the DNS response does not have an
"Authority Section". Since sendmail does not use the IP returned I am thinking
that it is waiting for additional information and is waiting for 60 seconds and
timing out (causing the long message send times). The next DNS request for the
same name, packet #3, fails with a "Return Code: 3 Name Not Found" but I think
that sendmail is still waiting for more information from the first DNS request.
So as I suggested in my first response I think a valid hostname may fix the
problem.
