The CPRef is pretty good for determining required includes. The overview
page for each API lists them.

Generally, you don't have to change the configure file. You can override
the defaults.
configure --help
will tell what overrides are available. In this case, you can use
./configure --oldincludedir=pathtoolkitincludes
Sometimes you have to override the CC or the CFLAGS enviroment variable,
but this is a less attractive option.

So would I, but programs tend to do what you tell them to. The flipit
configure generates
CFLAGS = -g -O2
which is not the best choice of flags IMO. For example, the rsync
configure contains
# If GCC, turn on warnings.
if test x"$GCC" = x"yes"; then
CFLAGS="$CFLAGS -Wall -W"
fi
which results in
CFLAGS=-g -O2 -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -Wall -W -I./popt
This may be because the rsync configure was generated with a newer
autoconf (i.e. 2.61) or it may be something the rsync developers decided
was a good idea. I suspect the later, although I can't tell for sure
because the rsync distro does not include the .am files.
