Okay, found my error. I had "parse var somevar WITH dd '-' mm '-' yy"
and "parse var" isn't supposed to have a "with" (according to the online
docs only "parse value" has a "with"). My first target variable was
being set to a null string; took out the WITH and it works fine.

Rollin, thanks. Until I found my error I was wondering if your "str"
variable might be some keyword I'd missed.

Greg, thanks. Your example is pretty close to what I was writing.
