Linux has been hacked to serve as a real-time operating. There is a
lot of activity from a group at New Mexicao State University with
real-time Linux. In effect, they have written a real-time interrupt
layer that takes a higher priority than the regular Linux kernel. You
have to set aside additional memory blocks to act as buffers between
the real-time layer and the rest of Linux.
I understand that QNX is based on a real-time microkernel. It is
targeted at embeded systems and dedicated applications. For example,
the Netpliance system sold at Circuit City runx QNX. Also, QNX is
following the lead of Sun. The will offer (Real Soon Now) an
inexpensive CD or download version for developer evaluation. Just the
thing to go with my Solaris 7 for Intel CD-ROM.
