A few followup notes to my talk on SNMP:
Slightly modified set of slides:
http://www.lafn.org/~aw585/snmp2.html (general meeting)
http://www.lafn.org/~aw585/perlnotes2.html (programming SIG)
1) Forgot to mention that the MIB/OID scheme is very
similar to compound 'stem' variables in Rexx.
Which of course is similar also to file directory
system except that only the contents of one
variable is stored in the variables instead
of a complete file.
2) Forgot to mention that there is provision in the
HPFS file system to encode extended attributes of
files in ASN.1 (probably using BER).
(See a brief mention in Bill Schindler's
'Down to Earth Rexx', Ch. 17, table 17.6, p. 322
or 'TYR in 21 Days', Ch. 17, table 17.6, p. 309)
If anyone else knows more about this,
I for one would like to know more.
3) Simon Leinen's SNMP pure (no compiled
languages involved) Perl package almost certainly runs
on OS/2 *because* it is necessary to run MRTG.
(Which has been ported to OS/2).
4) Most of the Agents, running in monitored devices
are either built into the firmware or are
daemons/servers that have to be fired up.
Most Cisco/Nortel etc. devices have this stuff built into them
to to be available automaticly.
