A day or so after this was posted, I ran across in Dr. Dobb's Journal,
Dec. 1999 #306, p. 118, 'Algorithm Alley' column,
'Programming Pearls: Cracking the Oyster' by Jon Bently,
the following quote, which seems pertinent, at least to me:

'Simple programs are usually more reliable, secure, robust, and efficient
than their complex cousins, and they're easier to build and maintain.'
