There were several compilers used by IBM internally PLS, PLAS, PL.8, and PL386
for a few. They all used the PL/I syntax, none had a runtime environment
(which PL/I has) that I know of. They also did not have high level built-in
functions. I think they all had a way to drop into assembler if and when it
was necessary (in most cases assembler was only needed for two or three
instructions). IBM used them to build the operating systems and the large
systems like DB2, CICS, and IMS. Applications were usually coded in COBOL,
FORTRAN, or PL/I.
The thing that made PLwhatever attractive was the front-end was basically
identical, the only thing that need to be changed was the back-end which did
the code generation.
