I learned it with the tutorials at www.edm2.com mostly. 
There were two multi-part series about WPS programming, 
starting at:

Unfortunately the first one is quite outdated since it is 
still based on SOM1, and the second one uses C++, so you 
really have to merge the two. But they explain the concepts 
quite nicely. And then there's the IBM samples from the 
toolkit. 
To see some "real world" WPS code, get the XWorkplace 
sources via CVS from netlabs. www.xworkplace.org/cvs.html 
will explain you how to do it.
