FWIW, you have used the Software Installer (SI) many times. It's the
standard installer for apps such as Netscape and many others.
IBM probably intended this to be replaced by Feature Installer (FI) which
is very elegant, but never made available outside of IBM.
Both SI and FI have been sunsetted by IBM.

Rather that developing a roll-your-own installer, I suggest you take a
look at WarpIn (see Netlabs). It's open source and already handles most
of what you would need to code yourself.
