I'm staying in the Granite Hills section of El Cajon. Evacuation but no
damage. Some of the relatives, one of the attorneys, and a very good
friend were burned out. My real estate agent is a "maybe", I don't know
yet. The private rehab center where one of my in-laws recently spent a
month was in the middle of it (Wildcat Canyon Road is where several of
the deaths occurred) and I don't know what happened there.
Yes there's insurance but it doesn't cover a decent portion of each loss
-- it doesn't cover substantially inflated values, it doesn't cover the
now-deflated value of the land (which isn't insured anyway), it only
covers a portion of the destroyed personal property, it doesn't cover
some property improvements (such as some things done without permit),
and remember that the First Trust Deed holder is involved in these
settlements so "equity" (as in "what's left after the remainder of the
mortgage is paid off") is a big barrel of laughs right now, yes?
This also entirely messes up the family financial agreements which were
supposed to be finalized by the end of this year (tenants in common,
quit claims, trusts, and the bankruptcies). I thought I would be back
in L.A. soon but as of today I haven't the slightest idea what's going
to happen.
That being said, my heart goes out to those who suffered losses far
worse than these. I don't like it when people die.
