I use BEGIN blocks in another way.  I do a lot of matrix crunching, so I look at the input data, determine how big the matrix should be, then
 start a BEGIN block and allocate the matrix.
 
 
I've never used BEGIN blocks to avoid naming conflicts, mostly because I can't understand my own code if I use the same name for different
 variables in different places!
