This discussion is quite interesting, but IMHO problems arise that
do not fit any mold. A case in point:
In mid seventies I was given some exploration data of unknown
format, but I knew the contents because I also had a paper graph
display of its contents. My problem was to discover the format and
to come up with an approach to find a complete evaluation. There
was no "blueprint" no "theory", and existing solutions were in
my opinion faulty. It took two years of intensive effort, but I came
up not only a solution, but also full documentation of the software
so that it would be possible for someone in the future to make the
thing work. At that point I retired, and was told that my know how
was totally lost. This December at the annual company luncheon
I was embraced (total surprise) by my retired supervisor, was sought
by the vice-president (again a surprise) and the company speaker
declared that "some work.....from the time before the lab was moved
from La Habra" has been found useful. My interpretation is that they
found someone who knows APL and who having read my documentation
made my software workable again. But then again I could be wrong.
