Umm, with all due respect, may I suggest there's a bit of tunnel vision  
here?  Testing is more than looking for code bugs; it is a way to see if  
the original specifications, the system analysis, actually accomplishes  
the vision?  
 
Version 1.01 cleans up bugs.  Version 2 usually has things which were  
left out of Version 1 through oversight.  Finding those oversights  
requires testing.  You mention Alpha and Beta versions (and by inference  
Release Candidates); these aren't just looking for code bugs, they're  
looking for design bugs.
