Subject: SCOUG-Programming: Email servers

I must say I am impressed with the CommuniGate email server. I have downloaded
and installed it on a test machine. I have had a quick look through the
documentation, enough so I have been able to configure it so I can send emails.
This in a day and a half.

It appears to do most everything that was on our requirements list, I will
check more when Peter gets the requirements list posted to this list. It
verifies the HELO. It has both a local blacklist and external blacklists. It
has options to disconnect any user that causes x number of errors in t time for
tt time. This will stop a spammer that is using a dictionary attack. There
are exits that allow the checking for spam and/or viruses. From what I gather
from the documentation all of these checks are done while the SMTP transaction
is held open so the email can be rejected and not bounced after it has been
received. This is the correct way to handle email and one that I think should
be included in any email server we select.

You can configure the server using the command line (telnet), using a web
browser, or using SNMP. There is a WEB mail interface which we probably don't
need. It has mailing lists which I will configure when I get the domain name
defined.

I have set up one of my domain names to use for testing and am waiting for the
DNS information to propagate through the internet.
