I just thought of an additional test.

-- What is the mail server's action when a message is returned to a
"From:" address containing a valid domain but for which there is no SMTP
server (i.e. there's an A record but no MX record, _or_ there's an MX
record but no live SMTP server at the MX address)? In other words, if a
spammer or a malicious hacker sent a large number of messages with
"From:" addresses such as these, would they bog down the server as it
attempted to repeatedly contact the foreign SMTP server and waited
umpteen seconds on each attempt for responses which never came? And
yes, I know the sending SMTP server should only look for an MX record,
but some enterprising young programmer might decide that the A record
would be a nice failover when the MX is missing so it's a worthwhile
test.
