Greg,

To return this to a somewhat more even keel Steven doesn't
tell us the agenda for the Programming SIG. Instead we
inform him once we have decided.

I should have read Gregory Wilson's article before writing any
response instead of after I had done an initial response. In
doing so I should have gone back and edited out previous
response for the simple reason that on the need for a
development process using available tools we agree. He
directed his remarks as you have since to deficiencies in
software development in the scientific academic arena. I have
no argument with that.

I might argue that the "better" tools, those which incorporate
existing technology differently, may not exist. We agree that
we cannot avoid adopting a development process of some
kind in writing software. We agree that gains occur in
engaging in development process improvement, adopting a
better development process involving a methodology and its
tools.

In retrospect neither VIM nor jEdit offer the best starting point.
We seek something which offers interpretive execution of
source code integrated within a GUI editor. Unfortunately
interpreters usually work on a single language. Fortunately
we can add a compiled execution of source code to any
interpreter by switching on an optional code generator.

Having now downloaded both the Windows (on my 1.67GHz
Pentium 4 laptop) and OS/2 (on my 200MHz Pentium Pro
desktop) versions of jEdit (as well as VIM), I suspect my older
133MHz Pentium laptop, which has OS/2, using jEdit would take
any 45 minute presentation I might desire to present up to the
current standard of 2 hours. Thus at the moment for all the
previous reasons I would favor VIM over jEdit and Python over
VIM.

So Steven will have to wait until I settle on the content of my
presentation at the February Programming SIG meeting. I do
have some more pressing contract work with more immediate
deadlines to do first. I expect you can appreciate the
significance of that.
