Updates from last month's column:

AutoScroll has been updated as of 01/31/2003. This is an add-on for Mozilla and Phoenix that allows auto-scrolling functionality similar to HotScroll and XWorkplace. If you are not familiar with this, when you middle-click on a page, you can then move the mouse up and down to have the page scroll. Go to http://autoscroll.mozdev.org/.

Preferential version 0.4.3 has been released as of 03/01/2003. This is an add-on for Mozilla that gives you a tree with access to all of the preferences, including those that are not normally exposed. Go to http://preferential.mozdev.org/.

DFSee, which was demoed at the June 2001 SCOUG meeting, is now at version 5.14 as of 02/22/2003. It is a FDISK, display, analysis and recovery tool for disks and filesystems. It now includes some JFS and LVM support. With this version, it can now replace LVM.EXE and VCU.EXE to create & modify compatibility volumes. JAlbum version 3.2 has been released as of 02/11/2003. This is a web photo album generator that runs on Java 1.3, which means you need a current Software Choice subscription or eComStation. Go to http://www.datadosen.se/jalbum/.

CBIRC preview 1 has been updated as of 02/26/2003. It is an Internet Relay Chat (IRC) client (the CB is the author's initials) with features that include color, web links, DCC, and more. It is written in Java; the author recommends Java 1.3.1 with Java Web Start (which means you need a current Software Choice subscription or eComStation). Go to http://www.bratschi.net/cbirc/.

LAME version 3.94.a11 has been released as of 02/09/2003. This is a MP3 encoder, and includes a graphical frame analyzer. Use search key lame on Hobbes. There is also a front-end available called Puristin (version 0.26 as of 03/21/2000; download it at http://www.tec.puv.fi/~k3/os2/).

Open Watcom, which has been featured at several recent SCOUG meetings, is now at version 1.0 as of 02/07/2003. It now includes an OS/2 installer (or you can download ZIP files). This is an open-source release of the Watcom compiler. Harry Chris Motin carefully took us through download and installation issues in March 2002; read it at scoug204.watcom.html. Michal Necasek, our June 2002 co-presenter, has an article describing how to set up Open Watcom at http://pages.prodigy.net/michaln/os2/Watcom11c.html. Maul Publisher is now at version 2.23 as of 02/15/2003. It is billed as "the world's first professional desktop publisher for OS/2". It will automatically take care of page numbering in folding booklets, reversal of margins for facing pages, page numbering offsets where you don't want to start from Page 1, reversal of margins for top-bound booklets and top-folding booklets, centering margins on printers with odd margins, and multi-way folding sheets and maps. In addition, you have full control of column, row, gutter, and center gutter guides, including the automatic adjustment of page offsets when a number of sheets are bound into a folding booklet. WarpVision was updated on 02/27/2003. It is a player for DivX3/DivX4 format video streams, with MP3/AC3 audio. The latest version has a nice GUI interface, and no longer uses Odin and Win32 codecs. Go to http://os2.kiev.ua/en/wv.php.

    NOTES:
  1. There are downloadable "skins" available at http://os2.kiev.ua/en/wv.skins.php.
  2. There is also a command-line (02/24/2003) version of WarpVision available.
  3. According to the author, you must delete VIDEO2.INI prior to updating from a previous version of WarpVision.
  4. There is now DVD support via a plug-in called DVDCSS. For that, go to ftp://ftp.os2.spb.ru/pub/mmedia/contrib/dvdcss.1.2.4.zip.

BTTV version 0.5 (for BT8X8 TV cards) has been released as of 03/01/2003. It is a port of the Linux BTTV driver, with radio and TV working. Included is a small radio application, a small TV application, and the source is available (along with a LXAPI32 support driver for porting Linux drivers). The Neptune project is a giant library of "skins" for the PM123 MP3 player. Information is at http://www.os2ecs.net/neptune/history4.shtml. Download parts 1 - 5 of the catalog of skins, as well as one catalog of free skins at http://www.os2ecs.net/neptune/downloa4.shtml.

CoolFM version 2.0 beta 4 has been released. This is a powerful FM radio tuner control program, compatible with most popular FM tuners. Go to http://en.ecomstation.ru/coolfm/.


This month's new listings - Drivers:

SciTech SNAP Graphics version 2.1.2 RC2 has been released as of 02/13/2003. This release features support for the Intel i865G, ATI Radeon 9700, TV Out and DVI support on all Radeon chipsets, early rotation (portrait mode) support, and more. IBM has released as of 01/30/2003 a driver for select Intel PRO/1000 Copper Ethernet controllers: 82544EI, 82544GC, and 82540EM. NOTE: You need a current Software Choice subscription or access to eComStation updates to download. Go to http://service.software.ibm.com/os2dd/swc/ibmgc.exe.

IBM has released as of 12/31/2002 an update to the IDEDASD drivers. Drivers affected by this update include OS2DASD.DMD, OS2CDROM.DMD, IBM1FLPY.ADD, IBM1S506.ADD and IBMATAPI.FLT. Go to http://service.software.ibm.com/os2dd/free/idedasd.exe.

IBM has released as of 02/13/2003 the printer drivers for PostScript, inkjets, laserjets, and plotters to version 30.783. There are some additions to the lists of supported printers. Go to:

IBM has released as of 01/30/2003 a driver for LSI Logic SCSI (LSI53C1020 and LSI53C1030) adapters. Go to ftp://ftp.pc.ibm.com/pub/pccbbs/pc_servers/74p4792.exe. NOTE: The IBM page has a reference to Warp Server for eBusiness in the title, so I am not sure if it will work with regular Warp 4, Warp 4 Convenience Packs, or eComStation.

IBM has released as of 02/25/2003 a driver for Lucent V.90 PCI modems for the ThinkPad T20. NOTE: You need a current Software Choice subscription to download. Go to http://service.software.ibm.com/os2dd/swc/t20/ltmdmos2.exe.

Amouse version 2.4 beta has been released as of 02/02/2003. It now has USB support and improved Logitech support. It is a scroll mouse driver that works better on some wheel mice than IBM's driver. There is also a widget for XCenter available now. Go to http://www.nbsoftware.de/sw_ms2ben.htm.

DaniS506 version 1.6.2 has been released as of 02/14/2003. This is the replacement for IBM's IBM1S506 EIDE driver, which features support for many chipsets, PCCard controllers, busmastering, Ultra33 DMA, Ultra ATA-66, Ultra ATA-100, faster PIO due to 32-bit I/O, and much more. Use search key danis on Hobbes.

    NOTES:
  1. I tried it on one of my home machines (a PII-400 with an Intel SE440BX-2 motherboard) and it hung trying to load, so I had to revert back to version 1.5.2. Your mileage may vary; it does work on my ThinkPad T20.
  2. If you use DaniBoot version 1.0 in conjunction with DaniS506, you need to upgrade DaniBoot to version 1.0.2; use search key daniboot on Hobbes.

DaniATAPI version 0.3.13 has been released as of 02/14/2003. It is a replacement for IBM's ATAPI drivers (IBMIDECD, IBMATAPI, PCM2ATA.ADD, and OS2PCARD.DMD). It includes support for Zip-250 drives, including full media swapping, and even booting from Zip drives. It has better 32-bit PIO when combined with DANIS506.ADD (see above), and devices can be used as SCSI, for use with programs such as CDRecord or RSJ CD-Writer. Use search key dania on Hobbes.

Analog Devices AD188x (SoundMax) audio driver 3.1.4 has been released as of 02/14/2003. Use search key ad188xos2 on Hobbes.

VCDROM version 0.90b has been released as of 02/23/2003. This is a replacement for the IBM version. Go to http://en.ecomstation.ru/kiewitzsoft/vdd-vcdrom.php.


This month's new listings - Applications:

The WarpZilla team has released Mozilla 1.3b as of 02/11/2003. This is an update to Mozilla 1.1 or 1.2a that was demoed by Steven Levine at the Sept. 2002 SCOUG general meeting, and was mentioned in the May 2002 Mr. Know-It-All. Go to ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla/releases/mozilla1.3b/. There are 2 files (take your pick):

  • mozilla-os2-1.3b-installer.exe (now a self-extracting executable/installer)
  • mozilla-os2-1.3b.zip (you must unzip it yourself into a directory)

  3. This release now has a spell-checker and a spam filter where it will automatically move junk mail to a spam folder.
  4. The recommended installation method is to install into a fresh directory; however, if you install over an older version, be sure to delete GKCONTNT.DLL (or GKCONTENT.DLL) and COMPREG.DAT; otherwise you may have problems running WarpZilla after installation.
  5. Startpmm version 0.2 has been released as of 02/01/2003. This is a small program to integrate PMMail with Mozilla. Use search key startpmm on Hobbes.
  6. MultiZilla version 1.3 has been released. This is an extension that adds more features to the tabbed interface in Mozilla. Go to http://multizilla.mozdev.org/.
  7. PrefBar version 2.2.2 has been released as of 02/28/2003. It allows you to configure several Mozilla settings on the fly, and now incorporates the features of UABar. Go to http://www.xulplanet.com/downloads/prefbar/.

eComStation version 1.1 RC1 R5 has been released as of 02/04/2003. This is available for those who have the Upgrade Protection feature. Go to http://www.ecomstation.com/.

    NOTES:
  1. It is at least 500MB in size.
  2. A "Patch2" update is also available.

InnoTek has released as of 03/02/2003 a full port of Sun Microsystems' Java Virtual Machine version 1.4.1 (beta 5), based on the Windows version (using Odin). It is free for personal use; enterprise customers can obtain licenses in order to get defect support. InnoTek plans to provide an updated OS/2 Kit for Java no later than 20 working days after a new Java platform release by Sun Microsystems. Go to http://www.innotek.de/products/javaos2/. HOWEVER: the current beta version doesn't include browser plugin support for Mozilla or Netscape.

Warp Expander version 0.4.2 has been released as of 02/02/2003. This is a front-end for command-line un-archiver programs such as UNZIP, UNRAR, UNPACK and others. It is a clone of BeOS Expander. Use search key wexp on Hobbes. NOTE: Versions for installation via WarpIn are also available.

Speaking of UNRAR, it is now at version 3.1.3 as of 02/02/2003. This tool for extracting RAR archives has >= 2GB file support and no EMX dependency; it also includes the source for Visual Age for C version 3.6. Use search key unrar on Hobbes.

Links version 2.1pre7 (not to be confused with Lynx version 2.8.5 dev13) has been released as of 02/01/2003. This is a small and fast WWW browser that supports graphics, JavaScript, font smoothing, tables, and allows for considerable customization of the cache, character set, and more. Use search key links on Hobbes.

Vice/2 version 1.11 has been released as of 01/30/2003. This is a port of the versatile Commodore 64 emulator. It uses DIVE and DART. Go to http://www.d4m.de/vice2/, or use search key vice2 on Hobbes.

gX version 0.4 was released as of 02/18/2003. This is a native 32-bit XML editor and parser for OS/2; it can do full validation and SGML compatibility checking. The editor uses document type definitions to provide guidance in authoring correct documents. For example, use it to create HTML 4.0 documents, or DocBook books and articles. Use search key gx- on Hobbes.

Pointer Pack version 1.2 has been released as of 02/24/2003. This is a package of several mouse pointer sets. Use search key pointer on Hobbes. NOTE: You need WarpIn to install this.

cdrecordProDVD version 2.0 has been released as of 01/30/2003. This program allows you to write DVDs; it requires a license key to write more than 1GB. Go to ftp://ftp.berlios.de/pub/cdrecord/ProDVD/.

cdrdao version 1.1.8 has been released as of 03/01/2003. This program writes CD-R/RW's in Disk At Once mode. Use search key cdrdao on Hobbes.

CDR/RW Wizard version 1.0 RC6 has been released as of 02/08/2003. It is a GUI wizard interface to CDRecord/2 to burn CDR/CDRW (data, audio, etc). It now features BootWizard, for creating bootable CDs, and CDRDAO/2. Go to http://www.quasarbbs.net/rocco/.

Audio/Data-CD-Creator version 0.53 has been released as of 02/16/2003. It is a folder class for the WPS which works as a front-end for cdrecord/2 for creating audio and data CDs. Just put wavefiles or data into this folder and press "write". Arbitrary ordering of files is possible via drag-and-drop. Use search key audiocdcreator on Hobbes. NOTE: Source is also available.

CW-Multimedia Classes version 0.2.5 have been released as of 02/16/2003. These classes are for seamless integration of the MMIO procedures for MP3 and OGG files; after installation, OGG and MP3 files are treated the same way by the WPS as the other audio files, with icons and menus. There is also a new Media Folder, which plays any audio class known to OS/2. It also includes a replacement JPEG class. Use search key cw-mmclasses on Hobbes. NOTE: There is a German version available also.

MMAudio Pak contains codecs for FLAC, MP3, and OGG Vorbis, which have been updated to version 0.2.0, 0.4.2, and 0.3.1, respectively. With these codecs the OS/2 multimedia system is able to play (and convert to WAV) FLAC, MP3, and OGG Vorbis files without any additional software. TVShow version 0.92 has been released as of 02/21/2003. This is intended for viewing TV with BT878-based TV cards. Go to http://os2.kiev.ua/en/tvshow.php.

GSView version 4.3.1 beta has been released as of 02/10/2003. It is a graphical document viewer that uses GhostScript as its' display engine. Go to ftp://mirror.cs.wisc.edu/pub/mirrors/ghost/ghostgum/beta/. Info is at http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/gsview/. Source is also available.

New builds of Odin are available as of 02/18/2003. There are release builds and debug builds available. Go to ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/odin/daily/.

CVS version 1.12.0.2 has been released as of 02/19/2003. This is a very useful tool for projects with multiple developers. Go to ftp://ftp.os2ports.com/incoming/. An older version (1.11.2 as of 08/22/2002) is available at Hobbes with search key cvs.

POSIX/2 beta 0.1.1 has been released as of 02/21/2003. This adds BSD interface additions to EMX to give OS/2 a complete POSIX / Single Unix Specification environment. This should make porting Unix applications easier. You can find binaries of the latest version at ftp://ftp.os2ports.com/incoming/, and the older (complete archive) alpha 3 at Hobbes with search key p2alpha.

GNU Make version 3.79.2a1-r2 has been released as of 02/21/2003. This is an essential tool for writing and/or porting open-source programs. Use search key make on Hobbes.

GoSierra version 3 has been released as of 03/02/2003. This is a patch that allows old Sierra and Dynamix DOS games to work using SoundBlaster sound. Use search key gosierra on Hobbes. Information on getting other DOS games to run under OS/2 is at http://en.ecomstation.ru/kiewitzsoft/doscompat.php.

NetDrive version 2.2 beta 1 has been released as of 02/22/2003. It allows users to mount a FTP site or a local directory or a network resource to a virtual volume. There are also many plugins available now. Go to http://www.blueprintsoftware.com/netdrive/.
