Updates from last month's column:

DFSee, which was presented by Tony Butka at the March 2004 SCOUG general meeting, is now at version 7.12 as of 09/07/2005. It is an FDISK, display, analysis, and recovery tool for disks and filesystems. It includes the ability to resize FAT and FAT32 partitions, and has some JFS and LVM support. DVDDAO version 1.1.2 has been released as of 09/07/2005. It is a tool for writing DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, and DVD-RAM discs. Use search key dvddao on Hobbes.

TAME/2 version 1.02 has been released as of 08/27/2005. This is a GUI front-end for SANE (Scanner Access Now Easy), which now comes as a complete scanning solution, together with SANE 1.0.16 for SCSI and USB scanners. It has a preview window, supports MMOS2 image formats and light tables, and more. Many scanners from Microtek, Epson, HP, Mustek, Umax, and more are known to be working with this package. PMRaw version 1.32 has been released as of 08/02/2005. It is a graphical front-end to DCRaw, which lets you display images from digital cameras in RAW format, and convert them to BMP or JPG. Go to http://os2.zworks.de/PMRaw/eng/.

NesCafe version 0.612 has been released as of 08/21/2005. This is a Java Nintendo Entertainment System emulator, which includes the source code under the GPL. Go to http://www.davieboy.net/nescafe/.

PM123 version 1.31 beta 4 has been released as of 08/19/2005. It is a MP3, WAV, and CD Audio player, which is now open-source. Some of the features include sharing of the sound card, playlist with drag/drop support, HTTP streaming, and the use of "skins" (including some cool WinAmp skins) to change the program's look. eComStation Maintenance Tool version 2.1.8.9 has been released as of 08/28/2005. As the name implies, it is used to apply maintenance to eComStation. If you are a registered eComStation user, go to http://www.ecomstation.com/; after signing-in, you can then download the Maintenance Tool.

WDSibyl has been updated as of 08/20/2005. This is an open-source continuation of the commercial product Sibyl, which is a Pascal / Delphi compiler. Go to http://members.chello.at/webstar/wdsibyl.html. NOTE: The web site is in German, but there is English documentation available.


This month's new listings - Drivers:

SciTech SNAP Graphics version 3.0.8 has been released as of 08/04/2005. This is a universal video driver, with support for over 220 graphic chipsets, with extra features like zooming and multi-head. The latest changes include Intel i945G chipset and ATI Mobility Radeon 9550 (M12) laptop chipset. The Network Interface Card Pak (NICPak) has been updated as of 08/21/2005. This is a collection of various NIC drivers and a tool for detecting and installing them. Go to http://www.os2warp.be/index2.php?name=nicpak.

This is not a driver per se, but WatcomIFS has been released as of 08/28/2005. This is sample source for building an IFS driver using the Open Watcom compiler. Use search key watcomifs on Hobbes.


This month's new listings - Applications:

Jrescuer version 2.19 and JUne (JFS Unerase) version 2.00 have been released as of 08/05/2005. This is a tool to rescue files from a JFS volume which can't be mounted. Go to http://en.ecomstation.ru/projects/jrescuer/.

Moneydance 2005r2 has been released as of 08/08/2005. It is a personal finance manager written completely in Java. It includes transaction auto-completion, graphing, reporting, a reconciliation tool, running cleared vs. uncleared balances, transaction sorting, double-entry, multiple currencies, multiple accounts, and much more. Jeti/2 version 0.6.7 has been released as of 08/06/2005. This is a Java 1.4x client for instant messenger services, including Jabber, AIM, MSN, Yahoo, and ICQ. Go to http://www.ehlertronic.de/jeti2.htm.

CBIRC version 1.11 has been released as of 08/23/2005. This is a Java IRC client with features that include color, web links, DCC, and more. Go to http://www.bratschi.net/cbirc/.

GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) version 2.2.8 has been released as of 08/04/2005. It is similar in function to PhotoShop. Use search key gimp on Hobbes.

    NOTES:
  1. XFree86/OS2 is one prerequisite; go to ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/xfree86/4.5.0/. An installation guide is at http://www.os2world.com/os2files/xfree86/installation_v4.html.
  2. The EMX runtime (which comes with eComStation 1.1 & 1.2) is another prerequisite. If you don't have it already installed, use search key emxrt on Hobbes; for help with installation, see the June 2002 Mr. Know-It-All (http://www.scoug.com/os24u/2002/scoug206.mrkia.html).
  3. Some other ported Unix libraries may be needed; according to Steve Wendt, they are available on Hobbes.

PrefBar version 3.2 has been released as of 07/31/2005. It allows you to configure several Mozilla settings on the fly, and now incorporates the features of UABar. Go to http://prefbar.mozdev.org/.

PMExif version 0.93 has been released as of 07/23/2005. This is a GUI application which produces a list of EXIF data for a whole directory of images, based on the RXEXIF.DLL. Go to http://os2.zworks.de/PMExif/eng/.

JAlbum version 5.2.2 has been released as of 06/09/2005. This is a web photo album generator that runs on Java. Go to http://jalbum.net/.

CDMagic version 3.6 has been released some time ago (as of 03/04/2005). It has many audio, database, and CD cover functions, including MP3 and CDDB support. Go to http://www.cdmagic.de/.

Musepack's MPEGplus version 1.15v has been released as of 08/09/2005. MPEGplus (.mpc) is a lossy audio format like MP3. Use search key mpcs on Hobbes.

The RAR archiver has been updated to version 3.50 as of 08/08/2005. It is a command-line compression utility, with tight general and multi-media compression, recovery record option management of non-RAR archives, RCVT (aRchive ConVersion Tool), and more. Go to http://www.rarlab.com/.

bootAble version 4.1 has been released as of 08/18/2005. This is a script which can be used to create a maintenance partition or bootable CD with enough facilities to fully manage and recover your system. It contains support for LVM, HPFS, JFS, FAT32, UDF (turned off by default), and the CD file system. Go to http://www.xs4all.nl/~hrbaan/.

CoolFM version 2.17 has been released as of 08/26/2005. This is a powerful FM radio tuner control program, compatible with most popular FM tuners, including several USB models. Use search key coolfm on Hobbes. NOTE: You need WarpIn to install.

DOSBox Front End version 1.9 has been released as of 09/06/2005. This is a GUI front-end for launching games using DOSBox. Use search key dosboxfront on Hobbes.

PHPGUI version 0.94 has been released as of 08/11/2005. This is a graphical workbench for the development of dynamic web sites using PHP, MySQL, and HTML. Go to http://os2.zworks.de/phpGUI/eng/.

The PostgreSQL 8.0 port has been updated a while back (02/25/2005) to build "e" with PLJava support. As the name implies, it is a SQL database. Use search key postgre on Hobbes.

CDRWSEL version 4 beta 2A has been released as of 09/04/2005. This is a GUI program to attach multiple CDRW's at the same time using RSJ CD-Writer. New to this version are:

  1. Updated design
  2. Simplified install program
  3. Some modifications & corrections to the RSJ interface
  4. New support for DVDDAO
