You mean a CHKDSK error, yes? Your boot starts, CHKDSK runs, and you
get the error?

If that's not it, what disk error do you get? How big is your drive?
Have you resized any partitions (with Partition Magic or similar)?

You say you've "been having hard disk problems". What kind of problems
preceded this bootup disk error?

And does your system stop dead or is the error just reported and the
boot continues?

Is this IDE or SCSI? If IDE, are you (or were you) using the new IDE
drivers? If IDE with the new IDE drivers, remember that they're not
included in FixPak 6, 7 or 8 -- copying these driver files from an old
backup could downlevel your IDE drivers.

Are you restoring from a tape backup, or do you mean that you're
actually using the maintenance partition files to replace your E:
files? I don't think that restoring some backup files by running the
restore program from your maintenance partition which has a different
FixPak level could cause a problem. None of the maintenance partition
files are moved to your "main" partition during the restore.

If you can install FixPak 8 onto your E: that might get you "back in
sync". It's worth a try. Remember again that the new IDE drivers
aren't in FixPak 8; if you've been using them you'll have to install
them again.

Good luck.
