Well, filling in the blanks turned out to be incredibly easy, though a
little strange.
To start, if you have a CD, you do the installation in the "regular
way", find setup according to the instructions and double click, etc.
You'll be prompted for the Media Key at some point. Go ahead and enter
it. You'll also be prompted for a bunch of information like name,
address, etc., on the same screen. Warning from Felmon: do not use ANY
characters higher than 128 in your form, for example, no pound signs to
indicate and apartment number or office suite number. You could
probably put 1234 My Street, No. 987 or something like that.
After the installation is completed, you'll need to reboot.
After rebooting, log into your ISP and get the connection going. Then,
fire off Star Office and you'll get the registration form if you click
yes.
From that point on, you're in a registration application that uses Star
Office. It's good to have the names of your POP and SMTP servers at
hand (I got mine out of the preferences file in Communicator). I did
not supply the dotted decimal for the domain name server (the way they
fill in the blanks won't allow a three-digit number in the last
position), but IGN specifies a DNS when you log in, so I suspect you
just need to have a DNS active.
The first screen that comes up asks for the customer number and
registration key. My assumption (from many years of supplying things
like that) was that it wanted that information from me. WRONGO! If you
have bought Star Office from the company and not from BMT, you will have
them. What this amounts to is a way to be sure that unlicensed copies
don't go out floating around the world (probably reasonable from their
perspective).
For CDs bought at BMT, the customer number and the registration key that
are required to register must both come from beautiful downtown
Fremont. The easiest thing is to click on the online registration
button. You will need to copy over the server and login information for
your ISP into StarOffice (it will prompt you to supply the necessary
information). An interesting thing is that it didn't choke on the
domain differences between my POP server and my SMTP gateway (two
different ISPs for reasons that I won't go into here).
I got back in the same window all the information I needed and,
magically, it all got into the right slots without my having to do
anything else. The next time I logged into my email, there was a
separate email with all the information exactly in the same form as it
showed up inside Star Office.
So, this is the documentation on how to do it. If somebody wants to use
this to make a FAQ, feel free.
I hope those of you who have been having trouble getting your copies are
successful soon.
Thanks to Paul and Felmon for their pointers.
