Hi, T=E2m -
I noticed in your email (from really late last night ;-) that you apparen=
tly
want to connect to the Internet in various public locations. That's a ve=
ry
straightforward task.
You'll need to find out the following information:
1. Does the location use DHCP (this is the protocol/software/server that
automatically assigns IP addresses dynamically to the systems in its doma=
in
and most places that allow public connections use it)? If it uses DHCP, =
you
will not need an IP address for the system you're connecting.
2. If the location doesn't use DHCP, you'll need the domain administrato=
r
(which can be ALL different kinds of people, depending on the way the sit=
e is
administratively organized) to assign you an IP address. This is a pain.
3. I assume that you might want to do something like email once you're
connected, so you'll need the names of your POP3 server and your SMTP ser=
ver.
Warning: some public connection sites have firewalls that may not allow =
you
to use "your own" SMTP server. But, I've found that just putting in the =
name
of "their" SMTP server works just okay, not graciously sometimes, but oka=
y
most of the time. So, sometimes you'll need the name of their SMTP serve=
r.
Once you have these chunks of information, you should be able to go into =
MPTS
and TCPIP and configure your system properly.
HTH.
