I have a Linksys bidirectional that I have used for several years to run  
four printers from one computer, works the other way also.  There are  
others.  Cyberguys has one for &30.

I used mechanical switches until I got an HP 550C.  I didn't think it  
would work but I tried it anyway.  It printed garbage.  Probably too  
much inter-contact capacitance.
