How fast were you running the thing?!?!? :))

I think you'll see more (a lot more) conductor-to-conductor capacitance
in the two cables than you'll see between the switch contacts. Or maybe
the leads at the physical switch weren't dressed properly and were
capacitively coupled (I've seen studio gear that required redressing).

If the mechanical switches worked on printers prior to the HP 550C, do
you know if there was a speed difference? I'm curious if an increased
bit/sec speed was involved. Did you put a scope on it by chance? Were
you using some "really long" cables which might have contributed a lot
of capacitance?

I use a bunch of LaserJet II's and IID's which I think are 500KB/sec
(parallel). I don't remember any more what the handshake is; are the
connections strobed once the bits are set up?
