The only person who's ever told me they'd had a problem with xcopy was
Kim.
There was a thread on one of the newsgroups last month about using xcopy
to move partitions. Seemed to work for them. And one comment in that
thread was from a guy who had used xcopy to copy his OS/2 installation
to a new hard drive, and it worked. He said something like "Sure
surprised me" but xcopy _did_ work okay.
Xcopy doesn't give you a return code that can be used to catch errors.
For example, if the target drive runs out of space, xcopy doesn't tell
you. I have "if errorlevel" statements in my backup .cmd files but
xcopy always returns a 0, even when I can see errors on the screen.
I _could_ zip up all the files instead of using xcopy, but I like to
have instant access to the backed-up files.
(Lurkers: I back up to a dedicated hard drive. Two generations in two
separate partitions. I do have to purge files that have been deleted or
renamed from the backups since xcopy doesn't do this.)
