There are several, including Kim, that have problems with xcopy over the
network. I attribute this more to uncaught network timeouts than anything
else.
The problems I was referring to is folks that have done xcopy's from a
live system. An obvious user error, to me, but not to the victim.

Done right it can. Ask Rocky about one of the ways to do it wrong.
However, his problem was not specifically a backup/restore failure.
