Ray, the update Gary mentions won't work with earlier versions of Java
for OS/2.
Which version of Java do you _currently_ have installed? In your root
directory, do you have a JAVAOS2 directory and do you have a JAVA11
directory?
-- If you have \JAVAOS2\, that is the old original Java 1.0.2 version
which the current files *won't* update and you'll first need to install
Java 1.1.8 from Software Choice (it's free).
-- If you have \JAVA11\, run
java -version
and
java -fullversion
to see what your current level is. If it isn't "Java 1.1.8" you'll
first need to install Java 1.1.8 from Software Choice (it's free).
-- To originally install \JAVA11\ you need Feature Install, an
"installer" from IBM. To install the \JAVA11\ updates you don't need an
installer, you just switch to the root directory which contains the
JAVA11\ directory and execute the self-extracting files -- they unzip
over the previous files.
-- You can get Feature Install (currently at 1.2.5) and Java 1.1.8 from
Software Choice "Free Features" at:
http://techsupport.services.ibm.com/asd-bin/doc/en_us/catalog.htm
-- If you only have Java 1.0.2 on your machine and you're installing
Java 1.1.x for the first time, I *think* you have to manually clean up
your CONFIG.SYS file after the installation. Search it for any
instances of JAVAOS2 and *remove* them. This command line will check
your config.sys file:
find /i "javaos2"
_____
If you have Java 1.1.8 installed, the update files are at:
ftp://ftp.hursley.ibm.com/pub/java/fixes/os2/11/118/
which you can type into your browser line just like an http:// url.
The newest update was last Friday. The files are self-executing .zip
files.
IBM stopped supplying an update README file a couple of updates ago;
here's the contents of the README from last February:
Installation of the JDK
-----------------------
1/ Back up your existing JAVA11 directory and sub
directories.
2/ Make sure you are using the binary ftp option.
3/ Download runtime.exe, toolkit.exe and samples.exe
4/ Stop any JVMs that are currently using files in the
java11 directory tree.
5/ From the root directory of the drive where Java is
installed run each of the three downloaded EXE files
in turn. NOTE: These zip files should be installed
OVER your existing installation directory tree, not
into an empty directory.
6/ Type java -fullversion to verify that you are now
running the updated level of Java.
There are three other files at the IBM site besides the three mentioned
in 3/ above -- fixes.html (a text file of the fixes in this update),
os2jre.exe and rmi-iiop-toolkit.exe. I can't remember what the
difference is between os2jre.exe and runtime.exe, or what
rmi-iiop-toolkit.exe does; I just install everything.
Gary says you only need RUNTIME.EXE. For many users, that's all you
need. The samples.exe file has a couple of cute demo programs (and some
really dumb demo programs).
Holler back with your current Java version ("java -version" and "java
-fullversion").
