I recently got some files with a jpeg extension. Their icon is that
of a text file and of coarse they are treated as a text file if I
click on them. I changed the extensions to jpg, the icon changed to
jpg, and clicking it opened it as a graphic.

They are on an HPFS drive. Is this normal? Is there some general way
to tell the system that jpeg=jpg?
