It's rarely used explicitly. However, it's used implictly by the WPS all
over the place. There's a one-to-one relationship between Desktop folders
and this directory tree.

Neither. It just means you have lots of trash lying around left over from
WPS failures. Read the Unimaint docs altdesk.txt and deldesk.txt to
understand whats needed to figure out which one is really your desktop
directory and how to take out the trash.

Nope. There's just no code in either to automatically fix up this kind of
mess.

BTW, you do get the prize for having the largest number of busted desktops
I have seen to date.
