I have successfully cloned the boot partition to another HDD.  That  
sounds like a backup to me.  And the individual files were available.  
 
I used PM 3.05 running from a floppy while booted from a DOS floppy.  I  
used the copy function; no fuss, no switches, no extra programs.  I  
cannot imagine having a PC without PM.  And I have never known a reason  
to go beyond 3.05.  
 
And my removable drive "sneeker net" makes the job even easier.   
 
I have a Zip drive and a CD burner.  But I consider them almost obsolete  
with HDD space at one dollar per G.
