)
Since you can't open the messages, you can't move them. So you'll have
to play with the folders.
First, I use Netscape 2.02 for email, not Netscape 4.61. I *think* that
the file naming conventions are the same -- each folder has two files
named "Folder." (no extension) and "Folder.snm". (As I recall, you can
just move the email files back and forth between the two.) Check this
from a command line -- do a DIR and there should be *two* files for each
folder.

Suggested fix method #1:
-- Try opening the "bad" messages while you _aren't_ connected to the
Internet. If the problem is caused by malformed .gif files and they're
being called in by embedded HTML from some web site, this will stop them
from appearing and Netscape won't crash.

Suggested fix method #2:
-- Copy all your folders to a \MailTemp\ directory "just in case". :)
-- We're going to add some "filler" messages to your Inbox so your
existing "good" messages won't be followed by any of the "bad"
messages. (This way you can move the "good" messages to a different
folder without automatically opening the "bad" ones.)
---- 1. Send yourself some "filler" messages with a Subject that will
sort to just before the remaining "bad" messages. For example, if the
bad messages have titles like "Get Rich Quick", "Cheap Inkjet
Cartridges" and "Hi From Suzette" then send yourself three messages with
Subjects of "Get", "Cheap" and "Hi".
---- 2. Now click on the Subject column header to sort the messages into
Subject sequence. After you do this each of the "bad" messages will be
directly after one of the "filler" messages.
---- 3. Move all the good messages to a new folder with a name like
"Temporary". (If you aren't sure how to create a new folder holler
back.) The "filler" messages will keep Netscape from trying to
automatically open any of the "bad" messages.
---- 4. Once all the good messages are moved, close Netscape and delete
your Inbox folder (and Inbox.snm if it exists). Then rename Temporary
(and Temporary.snm if it exists) to Inbox (and Inbox.snm). Restart
Netscape and all should be well.

Suggested fix method #3:
-- Copy all your folders to a \Mail\Temp directory "just in case". :)))
-- Close Netscape. Open your Inbox folder in a text editor and delete
the offending messages (or at least the parts of them that are causing
the crashes). *ALSO* delete the Inbox.snm file so its pointers don't
"point" to the wrong messages. Restart Netscape. Everything should
work okay.

Holler back and let us know if this helps.
