With some excitement I opened the APL newsletter from IBM that came in
the mail today--these newsletters don't come very often. The good news
is they announced version 2.0 of APL (1.0 has been around since
Abraham), and they've added Linux as a supported platform. The bad news
is that, apparently, they've dropped OS/2. Oh well, 1.0 with csd 19 is
really quite nice, but 2.0 does appear to have significant enhancements,
e.g., external namespaces. In the same vein, I've been preparing to
update my EMX development environment and find that gcc for OS/2 is
apparently (?) stuck at 2.81 while the nix world is at 3.06 or
thereabouts. I've been intending to attempt porting the current Octave
versions to OS/2, perhaps a task beyond my capabilities, but anyway
that's my intent. The last version ported to OS/2 is 3 years old and
recent versions add significant features. But I find advice on the
Octave site that gcc 2.96 is required to compile Octave versions just
barely past the last OS/2 port. Maybe that's the reason later versions
haven't been ported to OS/2. I'll keep looking into this, but do admit
a bit of discouragement.
