Hello
Myself I dislike internal modems because they do not work
while the PC is off.

Another but important reason I realized later:
An external modem is not claiming any IRQ's ;-)
My solution:
With an external 3COM U.S. Robotics 56K PRO Message Modem
(serial, NOT USB !!!) I am able to receive faxes while my
system is off and it also works as an answer machine ;-))
Working perfect since years !
