Disregard my last note. I played more with the association editor and got it   
working. I'm not sure what it was that I was doing wrong initially, but this   
last time I used the "associations by file filter". This time it showed me   
that OS/2 Systems Editor was still the prime program for *.doc, followed by   
Word; once I removed Systems Editor it started working.
