I've been trying to see if I could make a BOOTOS2 2-disk set for eCS.
Thus far, 5 attempts have bombed out, the first 3 due to lack of some
specific file being found in the right place, corrected each
subsequent time as I found them. (A stock eCS install places BOOTOS2
under \TVoice\Wiseprog\BootECS , where I think it is very unlikely
to work "out-of-the-box." For convenience sake, I gave it its own
directories off the root, and placed BOOTOS2 in DPATH, just as it had
been for Warp 4.) After dumping copies of the necessary files -- or
as many of them as I could identify, based on what had been listed in
the Warp 4 partition -- into the "Required" directory, I proceeded
with
BOOTOS2 2Disk=A Source=P:\BootECS\Required VDM Help Trace
and let 'er rip. Attempts 4 & 5 failed due to insufficient disk
space. O.K., I could have left out VDM and Help, but the \DLL,
\Install, and \MDOS directories created under \OS2 on Disk one are
empty. The obvious difference, and possibly the dealkiller, is that
the 4.5 OS2KRNL is 250K larger than the one from W4. So, in the most
recent attempt, I tried the Lxlite option. That only saved me around
34K from the kernel; the total free space on the resulting Disk 1 is
actually noticeably less !
Here is what is placed on Disk-1, after BOOTOS2 bombs out:
Disk Volume: BOOTOS2_1 10-11-02 1:17:36 pm
Available space 89,600 bytes (about
29K with LX version)

plus the aforementioned empty directories.
Assuming this _can_ work, how do I make it work ? (If it can't work,
it was ridiculous of Serenity to bother packaging BOOTOS2 with eCS.)
I could try working backwards from a W4 set that still works, trying
to substitute some eCS files, but there is still the matter of that
much larger kernel . . . and I gather we would need the later kernel
for things like supporting LVM. Or maybe the 2-Disk option is no
longer possible with a 4.5 level Warp ?
One other thing is that I deliberately fashioned a pared-down
Config.Sys specifically for this set, and placed it in the "Required"
directory where it's supposed to go, yet BOOTOS2 ignored it, insisting
on putting all sorts of unnecessary stuff (like all the Internet
networking stuff) into a large Config.Sys on Disk 1. That never
happened when I made these sets for W3 or W4.
TIA.
