Hi Butch,
I haven't got the slightest idea what a SanDisk is, but the following
might be helpful. If a SanDisk is a read-only drive then a lot of the
following doesn't apply.
First, make sure your G: data files are okay by running DIR /S. If the
problem is just the extended attributes you should be able to see all
the data files by going to a command prompt and running DIR G:\ /S.
Next you might want to make a backup of your G: drive "just in case"
something you do frazmatizes the drive. XCOPY should work if you just
want to copy the files to a different drive.
HELP SYS0276 says you should run "CHKDSK G: /F"
[C:\]help sys0276
SYS0276: The extended attributes are corrupted.
EXPLANATION: The extended attributes for the
specified disk or diskette are not usable.
ACTION: Run CHKDSK /F on the disk or diskette.
If that doesn't fix it you need to either fix or delete the G: root
directory's EA's.
-- 1. I *think* the extended attributes for a root directory are kept
in a Hidden System file in the root directory, and I *think* the file is
named "WP ROOT. SF" (note the embedded spaces in the name). I'm not
sure on this (it's been a while since I played with it) so please have
someone else verify the file name. You can delete this file --
hopefully fixing the problem. I've deleted "WP ROOT. SF" on several
drives and it's always been recreated when you open the drive's folder
(I just tested and verified this). The values of the extended
attributes will be lost but it's minor stuff like Properties (probably
default stuff anyway) and the positions of that directory's object icons
on the screen.
-- 2. You might be able to use an extended attribute editor to delete
the extended attributes for the root directory (if it will access a root
directory's EA's -- the two I just tried wouldn't). If you can figure
out which extended attribute is corrupted you can delete just that one.
-- 3. EAUTIL /S works on subdirectories but I've never tried it on a
root directory. If CHKDSK /F doesn't work then maybe EAUTIL /S can fix
the problem -- but I'm not sure what the exact syntax should be.
-- 4. SysGetEA and SysPutEA (both are Rexx calls) might be useful if
you really get stuck.
Or you can go to a command prompt and copy all the data files to a
different drive, then reformat the bad drive.
