This is not as important as keeping the wide and narrow devices on
separate channels.
When you mix SE and LVD hardware in the same box, dual channels are import
or the LVD devices will run at SE speeds.

The performance gain will be marginal or none at all.

It is a good idea to use adapters that can run a fast hard drive at it's
rated speed. However, if you only use the fast drive in the system with a
slow adapter now and then, it probably does not matter.

It is very unlikely you will have any problem moving drives around with
current adapters. Over the years my main system has had a variety of
adapters and drives installed. I just swap in the new hardware, power up
and I'm done. If I have installed a new drive, I do have to move the data
around to take advantage of the new drive.
If you do upgrade to drives in th U160 class or better along with adapters
that can run them at this speed, I suspect you will find the performance
increase significantly more than you expected.
