I guess I'm lucky to have a proactive ISP.
The SPAM filters they have on THEIR mail server
filter that stuff out as quickly as they can update
the filters. Since several thousand customers use
their mail service, they get tremendous leverage
from their filtering through all their customers
who do NOT receive the virus-laden messages.
I never have to download or examine virus messages,
after the first day or so. In addition, I can examine
the quarantined SPAM (separate from discarded virus
messages) and retrieve wanted messages up to 7 days later,
after which it is gone forever.
Their filter is Bayesian, in that it learns from its
"mistakes" (through user submittal) and simply gets
better and adapts to changing input over time.
It seems to me that this is the way a mail service
should be run. It is part of what I'm paying for and
I'll stay with these guys as long as they keep thinking
of me and tailoring their service to my needs.
