Thanks for your advice on that, Steve. I guess a clean install it will be.
I know there is always the UNIMAINT Portable Backup option, for restoring
one's Desktop, Preferences, etc. -- which I've never actually tried -- but
from what you say, that might be more of a risk here than usual.
