Steven: Why does life have to be so complicated! After I put the Java
1.4.2 DLL in the right plugin directory Tools==>Web Development==>Java
Console shows Java 1.4.2 and the properties look OK to me. But when I go
to command line and try Java ShowProperties | more I get this error

Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: showproperties

I had rto s=do this from the directory x\java142\bin.

How should I correct this if possible? Will installing Innotek's Java
help? Do I need to set java_home?

The answer to your questions is who knows?

I have no clue why an applet would care. Most are not even allowed to
check things like this.

You happen to be in luck because I needed a system properties checker
today for an entirely unrelated reason, so it's attacted. Run it as:

  java ShowProperties | more

Also, in Mozilla, use:

Tools -> Web Development -> Java Console

and type 's' to see the properties from withing the browser. The values
should match in both cases.

Regards,

Steven
