It's best not to make the assumption that all programs work the way you 
think they should.  It's also better to ask questions than complain.  Use: 
 cdrecord -atip >plex-atip 2>&1 
cdrecord, like many programs, writes output to both standard out (stdout) 
and standard error (stderr).
