This may not be at all related to the problem, but when I recently had
trouble connecting to SBC, I found out that they have changed their logon
procedure.
It used to be that username and password were sufficient. NOW they require
the domain name in addition to the user name (in my case I had to add
"@pacbell.net" to the username in order to connect.
