Steven,
I will try your suggestions also.

I'm about to fire up Forte Agent (where I first
noticed the loss of newsgroup access, after I got back
from my trip), to confirm my suspicions. As I said
earlier, nothing has changed at this end. Of course,
they could have changed their news server address
without informing us (again !), but that's a lesser
possibility, ruled out by the same alleged Tech
Support. You see, this has happened quite a few
times over the last few years. In EVERY prior case,
of my direct experience, that particular
authentication error has corresponded with known news
server downtime & repairs. Do you recall that old
medical joke, with the punchline "You know that thing
you had before ? Well, you've got it again !"
There are at least a couple of other SBC - Yahoo
subscribers on this list, in more or less this
geographical area. The SHORT answer would be for one
of them to confirm this, WHILE it is happening. Even
if service has resumed, history indicates the problem
will be back, before long. The best I can say is that
it's less serious than the (less frequent) occasions
when their email or web-access is down.
