Week before last, I was asking Steven to critique my proposed
configuration for a new PC. Last week, I ordered the Dell Dimension
8400 (3.20GHz Pentium, 1GB memory, 80GB hard drive, CD burner, DVD
burner, floppy drive, integrated gigabit Ethernet, and 3 year
warranty). I decided to "splurge" on a $29 Sound Blaster Live sound
card. A 19" flat panel monitor was included at no extra charge.

The machine arrived this afternoon, and is up and running WinXP Home. I
have connected my speakers and Canon i860 printer, and both are
working. I set the monitor to its maximum resolution of 1280 x 1024.
The CD drive works for installing the Canon printer driver. The DVD
drive works for playing a movie - the picture and sound are just fine,
or maybe even great!

The hard drive seems to be formatted as a single partition. WinXP says
the size is 76 million bytes (seems sort of small for an "80GB" drive -
maybe there's a hidden partition for restoring the o.s., or something).
I can look at things with DFSee on Tuesday.

I need to reduce the C: drive in size, and use the free space to build
some other partitions. I have Partition Magic 6.0, and I downloaded and
registered DFSee 6.17 today (on my older PC).

I'll probably create an NTFS "data" partition, a FAT or FAT32 (or both)
partition for sharing files between Windoze and eCS, and a couple of
HPFS partitions for eCS and for data. I plan to leave some free space,
so that I can add a JFS partition or whatever down the road.

How should I go about modifying the hard drive so that I can install eCS
1.2 and the "good" software for OS/2? Also, is anyone interested in
"playing" with this nice PC along with me, either in person or via
e-mail? It's a few weeks before the next Help Desk, isn't it?
Thanks,
Colin
