The main reason is that you must be connected the entire time that you need to
read and respond to your email. For me I do not like to leave my email on the
server I much prefer to have it on my laptop.

Downloading my email (and my wife's email) and disconnecting and then reading
and responding while offline then connecting to send any responses takes less
than 5 minutes where staying online the entire time can take a long time.
Since I do a lot of traveling, some to remote areas of the Southwest US and
some to Europe if I need to use dialup services it can be very costly to stay
online for extended amounts of time. Not all hotels have high speed
connections and charge exorbitant fees for dialup phone services (even 800
numbers) and overseas connections cost 25 cents a minute plus the cost of the
phone call so I stay online as little as possible.
