Ray:

This solution may not be helpful to you because it only runs on
the Windows, Linux, Solaris and Mac platforms, but I used YPOPS!
together with Thunderbird on a Windows machine to do what you
describe, that is, use a regular PC-based email client to use a
web-based account.
