I think you may be mistaken here, and that I have
Adaptec drivers for 320 that are applicable to eCS, or
even W4 @ a high FP level. Can't recall where I
picked them up, but I could easily make them available
to you.

There are. From LSI, and possibly from Tekram.

And even compared to SATA, which does have its own
price bump, and is maybe not yet ready for Prime Time
on our platform.

Besides performance, SCSI has historically had it
*WAY OVER* IDE on the MTBF spec. (Mean Time Between
Failures, a.k.a. overall service life.) Because it
was supposed to be an industrial grade item, intended
for servers. That may still be the case, though the 5
yr. warranties for SCSI have mostly gone away now, and
you have to hunt around to find the 3 yr. warranty
models.
