Svobi,
I subscribed to the Merlin Convenience Pack (Warp 4.51 and 4.52), and
also to eCS, starting at 1.0. I have never installed the OS/2 versions.

I still have an OS/2 (Warp 4, FP11, I think) on my older PC, along with
Win2K Pro and eCS 1.1. On my newer PC, which came with WinXP Home, I
installed eCS 1.2. I have not yet tried to update to the eCS Media
Refresh on either machine, although I have prepared to do so.

In my eyes, eCS is so close to OS/2 that I don't really make any
distinction between them. I am not positive, but I believe you can
leave off the eWorkPlace, and choose to have the Warp look and feel for
the Work Place Shell.

If I were installing fresh, as you are, I would use the Media Refresh of
eCS. It is due to go "gold" any day now, from what I read. Many people
are quite happy with the Beta release of the Media Refresh. You would
be completely up to date (OS/2 4.52 with FP5), and you'd have modern
versions of the popular, related software (Mozilla, Lotus Smartsuite if
you want that, etc.). This would save you some time in downloading and
installing a few items until you got around to it.

Of the "new" things in eCS, I really like the eCS Maintenance Tool. It
makes updating and / or installing some software very easy, and even
keeps a record for you of what you've done.

I'm sure you will get other replies, and you already know that you can
depend on help from SCOUG if you have issues with the eCS install.

It is a small point, but if you spend any more money on OS/2, I believe
it would be better to spend it with Serenity Systems, since IBM has
pretty much stopped work on OS/2. There may be a few more drivers or
USB enhancements, but if there are, you'll get those with eCS, too.

I'm sorry to hear of your hard drive problems, and I wish you the best
of luck with rebuilding your "life" on the PC.
Colin
